Jean Paul Gaultier is fed up with fashion waste and wants the industry to make a change. Gaultier says brands produce “far too many collections with far too many clothes,” acting as if a “contest” exists to see who can be the biggest and do the most.

As someone with 40 years of experience in fashion, Gaultier should know all about the waste that the industry creates. The designer maintains that the amount of clothing produced and trashed each year is “absolutely ridiculous.”

Many companies encinerate their excess merchandise at the end of a season, including Burberry which burned £28.6 million worth of clothing, accessories, and perfume last year in order to maintain exclusivity and protect the brand.

Due to these and similar acts, Gaultier claims that he is a recycling convert and announced that his January haute couture show “will be all about recycling.” He also urges his fans to “keep your clothes…and after, we can make something new. I will help you do that.”

Here’s to hoping he keeps his promise! With £140 million worth of clothes sent to landfill each year in Britain alone, fashion waste is a serious problem that our earth cannot sustain at its current capacity.
