If we had to pick the most stylish movie on Netflix right now, Do Revenge would take the cake—and eat it, too! We haven’t seen a more fashion-forward movie than this comedy in a while now, and its costumes do a great job paying homage to the ’90s and 2000s teen classics that we all know and love.

Do Revenge centers on two teens (Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke) who join forces to take down each other’s bullies. It takes inspiration from such films and Cruel Intentions, Clueless, Mean Girls, Heathers, and Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion—both in terms of tone and fashion.

Since the characters spend most of their time in uniforms, costume designer Alana Morshead put a lot of thought into making the right choice. Korean school uniforms were the main source of inspiration, so she added capes and blazers to the mix, and opted for a pastel purple and light green color palette.

“With our kids, even at school, they really care about their appearance, and we had so many pairs of earrings, socks, and shoes because that was how they could accessorize and express themselves. It just added to that fun, heightened reality,” Morshead told InStyle.

She also put a lot of effort into picking outfits for Drea and Eleanor, played by Mendes and Hawke. She wanted their looks to have very specific color differences, with Drea wearing blues, purples, and solids with a ‘90s supermodel vibe, while Eleanor opted for warmer and more vibrant tones that gave her a hippier, Twiggy vibe.

Not Okay is the latest social media satire taking the world by storm and its costumes are as wild and flashy as the film itself. The fashion choices of its “unlikable female protagonist” Danni Sanders are heavily influenced by Y2K nostalgia and they have a deeper meaning.

Not Okay tells the story of a wannabe writer (Zoey Deutch), who finds overnight social media fame after pretending to be a victim of a bombing attack during her fake trip to Paris. Sanders is in her mid-20s and clearly a millennial, but her fashion choices look straight out of TikTok and have clear Gen-Z influences.

This is not a coincidence and director Quinn Shephard explains that her style was influenced by some of the most popular micro-trends of last year, such as Emma Chamberlain’s nails, TikTok money piece hair, and Y2K-inspired fashion.

“Danni is a character who doesn’t like her life as an adult very much, so she loves trends that make her feel like she’s in middle school again, which perfectly lined up with the shift toward Y2K fashion that was just starting in summer 2021 when we filmed,” Shephard told WWD.

Sarah Laux worked as a costume designer on the set of Not Okay and she believes that Danni “basically has no style, other than messy.” She’s just a consumer, whose closet is full of disposable fast fashion. Her rise to social media fame reflects that as she pivots to Instagram-friendly fashion and beauty trends that perfectly reflect our own reality.

After a lot of anticipation and several delays, Disney’s Cruella finally hit theaters with a bang. The iconic 101 Dalmatians villain lived up to its reputation as one of Disney’s most fashionable characters in the new origin story, and she’ll completely change the way we approach fashion and beauty this summer.

“Cruella” Hair

The half black-half platinum blonde hairstyle is one of Cruella’s signature traits, and Emma Stone made us fall for it all over again in the new movie. We’re seeing similar hairstyles pop all over Instagram and TikTok right now, but it’s also pretty common to put a twist on it by dying the bottom of your hair blonde while leaving the top black.

“Cruella” Makeup

Cruella’s makeup looks are almost just as iconic as her hair, and it’s easier than ever to recreate them. Disney joined forces with MAC Cosmetics for a brand-new collection inspired by the chic villain, which allows you to easily channel your inner Cruella de Vil.

“Cruella” Fashion

Many of Cruella’s signature looks are too extravagant to be worn in real life, but that’s not stopping her from being a fashion icon. Her punk-rock-inspired style can be used as fashion inspiration, and we’re expecting it will put Dalmatian print, leather, and steampunk accessories on the map.

Tomorrow ♠ Meet Selah.

A post shared by Amazon Prime Video US (@amazonprimevideo) on

Clothes mean a lot in the world of Selah and the Spades, and the Haldwell School’s Queen B addresses their importance in her monologue about cheerleading uniforms. Selah tells a newcomer Paloma they’re in charge of deciding how short their skirts will be and how high and tight their tucks will reign, and that they’re doing it for control over their own bodies.

That’s part of the reason why we often see Selah dressed in her cheerleading uniform, it’s just another aspect of her life that she had total control of.

Cinematographer Jomo Fray also told Variety they tried to dress her in purples and gold as a way of having “a real sense of regalness about her” because she’s “the king, queen, judge, jury and executioner at Haldwell.” Each faction in the movie had a specific color palette, while Paloma is dressed in neutral earthy tones that separate her from everyone else.
