How to Keep Your Skin From Drying Out This Fall

Fall is rapidly approaching and while we’re all very excited for pumpkin picking, pumpkin spice lattes, pumpkin bread, and all other things pumpkin-themed, there’s a caveat to all this excitement. Fall also brings colder weather and while that’s mighty find for getting to break out our scarves and boots, it also means that our skin will be exposed to the icy air that dries us out. How can you prevent said dryness you ask? Here we have some tips from a top dermatologist that will keep you moisturized and luminous all season long.

Invest in a Humidifier

“Increasing the moisture in the air will help prevent your skin from drying out,” says NYC dermatologist Whitney Bowe, M.D. She recommends using it every night for maximum hydration.

Exfoliation

Bowe recommends exfoliating twice a week due to the fact that “When skin gets dry, dead skin cells pile up, making it impossible for any moisturizer to penetrate.”

Layering

“Fall is all about layering—in clothing and in skincare,” which is why Bowe suggests an antioxidant or hyaluronic acid-rich serum followed by a thick and creamy moisturizer or if you’re especially prone to dryness, an oil.
