Janelle Monáe is one of the most trailblazing fashion icons in the music industry, and her cousin Marsai Martin seems to agree. The Black-ish star recently sat down with Monáe to discuss her approach to fashion and revealed how she inspired her to be bolder on the red carpet.
The interview between Martin and Monáe will be featured in the September issue of InStyle, and it comes with an adorable part where the young actress gushed about her style idol.
“I admire so much about you. I love that you always stay authentic with your style. On the red carpet, you’re always in something that is totally different from everybody else,” Martin told her Grammy-winning cousin during the interview.
Janelle Monáe took a moment to look back at her fashion journey and revealed she was often bullied for her unique style. She kept on marching to the beat of her own drum and expressed herself by wearing clothes that made her feel comfortable.
“When I was starting out, I didn’t have a lot of designers that wanted to dress me. And I couldn’t afford to buy all the things I saw in magazines. My fashion sense was born out of turning nothing into something. I’ve always leaned into what makes me unique,” said Monáe while chatting with Martin for InStyle.
