]]> There’s been a big wave recently in designers who are proud of their ethnic backgrounds remaking modern pieces in ways that pay homage to their roots. The latest artists on our radar are a husband and wife duo from Portland, Oregon whose unisex line, Ginew, is the first of its kind as the only Native American owned denim label. 

After marrying in 2010, Amanda Bruegl and Erik Brodt began experimenting with leatherwork made from their marriage buffalo. “One thing led to another, and we ended up starting a tiny leather-goods business in our apartment,” said Bruegl. The couple continued with their start-up until 2014, when they decided to venture out into denim apparel.

While we might not think of denim as a traditional Native American material, that’s kind of the point. Ginew seeks to make clothing in a way that’s representative of what it’s like to live a modern American life with a proud Native heritage. Many of their clothes feature subtle nods to their tribes (Ojibwa, Oneida, and Mohican) or were made with their ancestors in mind. Brodt says that, “Our approach is a way for us to be who we are—contemporary American Indian people—while not necessarily adhering to the stereotypes of what indigenous clothing or design must be.”

If you’re not sure exactly how to wear grunge without looking greasy, then take a page out of Miley Cyrus’ book: the singer is well-known for her rock and roll style and lifestyle, despite the fact that her music seems to be less angsty and more pop-y these days. 

Just a couple of weeks ago, Cyrus blessed our eyes with this rock-inspired outfit. The star took a stroll out in Los Angeles sporting a Black Flag tee-shirt (a homage to the legendary rock and roll band) and curve-hugging light wash jeans. Cyrus managed to keep the ensemble from looking too casual by accessorizing properly: on her feet, black leather pointy-toed booties with a stiletto heel, a very cool statement belt featuring decorative safety pins, a Goyard shoulder bag, and loads and loads of jewelry. ]]> As we well know, circular fashion is a big trend toward making the industry more eco-friendly, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Within the realm of circular fashion is up-cycling: taking at least one product which is no longer in use and give it a few updates to make it wearable again.

The latest venture to come out of up-cycling is here and in full swing: high-heeled sneakers! We know what your thinking, wedges built to look like sneakers have been out for years now, but this new look is a little different. Designers are now in the business of hybridizing sneakers and stilettos. Don’t believe us? Just watch. 

From the Rombaut 2020 Spring collection, we have some highly futuristic-looking, metal-heeled stilettos featuring the soles of those heinous dad sneakers that everyone has been wearing. One version is a multi-colored velvet boot which is quite tolerable, while another looks like a bad knock-off version of the Yeezy sock boot. 

A much more palatable version of the hybrid exists from Ancuta Sarca; a Romanian-born French designer who repurposes Nike trainers into pointy-toed kitten heels. You can decide for yourself but we think these kicks are worth sporting.

]]> There’s been a big wave recently in designers who are proud of their ethnic backgrounds remaking modern pieces in ways that pay homage to their roots. The latest artists on our radar are a husband and wife duo from Portland, Oregon whose unisex line, Ginew, is the first of its kind as the only Native American owned denim label. 

After marrying in 2010, Amanda Bruegl and Erik Brodt began experimenting with leatherwork made from their marriage buffalo. “One thing led to another, and we ended up starting a tiny leather-goods business in our apartment,” said Bruegl. The couple continued with their start-up until 2014, when they decided to venture out into denim apparel.

While we might not think of denim as a traditional Native American material, that’s kind of the point. Ginew seeks to make clothing in a way that’s representative of what it’s like to live a modern American life with a proud Native heritage. Many of their clothes feature subtle nods to their tribes (Ojibwa, Oneida, and Mohican) or were made with their ancestors in mind. Brodt says that, “Our approach is a way for us to be who we are—contemporary American Indian people—while not necessarily adhering to the stereotypes of what indigenous clothing or design must be.”

]]> As I’m sure you’ve all noticed, grunge is in; and not only in but extremely chic, if done right, that is. If you’re not sure exactly how to wear grunge without looking greasy, then take a page out of Miley Cyrus’ book: the singer is well-known for her rock and roll style and lifestyle, despite the fact that her music seems to be less angsty and more pop-y these days. 

Just a couple of weeks ago, Cyrus blessed our eyes with this rock-inspired outfit. The star took a stroll out in Los Angeles sporting a Black Flag tee-shirt (a homage to the legendary rock and roll band) and curve-hugging light wash jeans. Cyrus managed to keep the ensemble from looking too casual by accessorizing properly: on her feet, black leather pointy-toed booties with a stiletto heel, a very cool statement belt featuring decorative safety pins, a Goyard shoulder bag, and loads and loads of jewelry. Nothing says rock and roll quite like an armful of bracelets and plenty of rings. Cyrus kept her hair down and showed off her natural wavy texture.

]]> Has there ever been a more glorious innovation than the ability to wear athletic clothes in public and have it be chic? We don’t think so. There’s nothing quite like running late in the morning and wanting to be oh so comfy while still looking cute and dressing quickly and being able to throw on leggings and a tight shirt and call it fashion. There is a caveat to this look – now that athleisure is so pervasive, everyone kinda knows how little time and effort you put into your appearance. Not that you look bad, but it’s a very casual look that’s not entirely appropriate for all circumstances. 

Fortunately, Margot Robbie has offered up the perfect solution to this problem. The actress was spotted wearing leggings and a crop top, showing off her enviable abs and feeling cozy while doing it. While this is the trademark athleisure look, Robbie opted to up the chic factor in her outfit by adding a gorgeous dual pattern (plaid on the outside, leopard on the inside) coat over top. Voila! ]]> As we well know, circular fashion is a big trend toward making the industry more eco-friendly, and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Within the realm of circular fashion is up-cycling: taking at least one product which is no longer in use and give it a few updates to make it wearable again.

The latest venture to come out of up-cycling is here and in full swing: high-heeled sneakers! We know what your thinking, wedges built to look like sneakers have been out for years now, but this new look is a little different. Designers are now in the business of hybridizing sneakers and stilettos. Don’t believe us? Just watch. 

From the Rombaut 2020 Spring collection, we have some highly futuristic-looking, metal-heeled stilettos featuring the soles of those heinous dad sneakers that everyone has been wearing. One version is a multi-colored velvet boot which is quite tolerable, while another looks like a bad knock-off version of the Yeezy sock boot. 

A much more palatable version of the hybrid exists from Ancuta Sarca; a Romanian-born French designer who repurposes Nike trainers into pointy-toed kitten heels. You can decide for yourself but we think these kicks are worth sporting.
