Like many high-profile red carpet events, the Met Gala went on hiatus in 2020, but its glamorous comeback is underway. American independence will be the theme of the upcoming event, co-hosted by Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, and Naomi Osaka.

The multi-talented quartet will be joined by the honorary chairs Tom Ford, Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour when the Met Gala takes place on September 13th. The official theme of the event and Costume Institute’s exhibit it accompanies will be “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”.

The Met Gala is expected to keep exploring a similar theme in 2022, with the follow-up exhibit “In America: An Anthology of Fashion”. If everything goes according to plan, this star-studded event will return on its storied date on the first Monday of May next year—May 2nd, 2022.

According to Costume Institute’s head curator Andrew Bolton, the key themes will include “the emergence of an identifiable American style and the rise of the named designer with an individual aesthetic vision.” He told Vogue that they’ll collaborate with American directors to create a cinematic experience in each room, which will depict different stages in the history of American fashion and reflect the personal relationship we have with fashion.
