The Right Way to Line Your Lips

If you’re going for a polished makeup look, lining your lips is a small step that will give your look that extra fine finish. When done correctly, it can enhance your lip shape, make your lipstick last longer, and prevent feathering. Here are a few tips on how to best apply lip liner.

Prep Your Canvas

Start with clean, moisturized lips. Apply a lip balm and let it absorb before you begin. Choose a lip liner that matches your natural lip color or your lipstick shade.

Master the Outline

Begin at the Cupid’s bow, the V-shaped area at the center of your upper lip. Make small, gentle strokes following your natural lip line. Work your way to the corners of your mouth, keeping the line as close to your natural lip border as possible. For the lower lip, start at the center and work outwards to each corner. If you want to create the illusion of fuller lips, slightly overdraw the lip line.

Fill and Finish

After outlining, fill in your lips with the liner. This creates a base for your lipstick and helps it last longer. Apply your lipstick over the liner, using a lip brush for precision. For a softer look, gently blur the liner with a cotton swab or your finger.
