The Fashion Industry Takes Great Leaps to Protect the Environment

Sustainable fashion has become a priority for eco-conscious fashionistas everywhere, and finally, the industry is taking action. A “Fashion Pact” has been created by Kering CEO, François Henri Pinault. The effort is aimed at reducing the fashion industry’s detrimental effects on the environment, including the climate, biodiversity, and the oceans.

Back in April, French President Emmanuel Macron recruited Pinault to come up with a solution to the fashion-related environmental crisis. In response, Pinault created the “Fashion Pact,” which promises that companies will no longer produce any single-use plastics by 2030, reduce microfiber pollution from textiles, and produce net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.  Currently, the fashion industry’s irresponsible practices are liable for an estimated 20-35 percent of the ocean’s microplastic and six percent of global greenhouse emissions.

While the pact is not a legally binding document, it will require the 32 companies who have joined to give annual data reports. The contents of said reports will be discussed in further detail at an October dinner for the CEOs hosted by Pinault. The pact signatories so far represent 150 brands, and even more are expected to join.
