It takes a true artist to turn trash that no one needs into something magical that can stand the test of time—and Paula Votteler is that artist. She became a true Instagram sensation after she started crafting handbags and other accessories from plastic waste.

Votteler enjoyed making clothes from a young age—she learned how to crochet at five, attended a sewing class in her youth, and learned how to embroider on her own. After giving up the idea of studying fashion design because she wasn’t any good at drawing, she decided to get a degree in packaging technology, which helped her reconnect with her roots.

“I’ve always enjoyed working with existing materials because they hold more value to me when I know their story or if they have one at all. With my packaging technology degree, where I also learned all the benefits of plastics, it somehow seemed inevitable that I would eventually merge both fields,” she told The Berliner.

Votteler has been interested in sustainability and recycling for quite some time and decided to use her designs to make our planet a better, cleaner place. Her bags are made from fabric, beads, packaging, and discarded waste, and she wants her bags to be a reminder “that fast fashion should not be supported and that we treat our planet like dirt.”

Most of us own more clothes than we actually need, and there comes a time when we finally decide to part our way with the items we no longer wear. The tricky part is figuring out what to do with them afterward, and these are three of your best options.

Get Creative

Instead of throwing your old clothes away, use them to make something new. If the fabric is still in good shape, you can transform it into scrunchies, hair wraps, scarves, and dozens of other tiny items.

Be Generous

If you don’t have enough time for these creative endeavors, donating your clothes is also an option. Before heading to a local thrift store, check if any of your friends or family members like the fashion item you no longer need.

Eco-Friendly

In case your old clothes reached a point of no return, and they’re too damaged to be worn again, recycling is the best idea. Some high-end stores, like H&M, have their own recycling programs and they offer discounts to customers who take part.

Our favorite fast fashion brands have been lining up to collaborate with Billie Eilish, and H&M is the next one in line. They dropped a new collection inspired by the singer’s signature style, and all of the items were made from sustainable materials.

Emily Bjorkheim, H&M’s head of design for Divided, said they’re super excited about this drop, and explained why they felt that the “Bad Guy” singer would be the perfect person to team up with.

“Billie Eilish is obviously an inspiring artist, but also someone a lot of people around the world admire for her personal style and empowering way of expressing her values. We want to enable her fans to step into her world and feel empowered to freely express their style as well,” Bjorkheim said in a statement.

Billie Eilish x H&M line hit the shelves on January 2nd, and all the items have been made from materials sourced in a more sustainable way. It features a wide range of pieces inspired by singer’s instantly recognizable personal style, including oversized shirts, hoodies and bucket hats, with splashes of her favorite neon green shade.

Banana Republic, Urban Outfitters, and now H&M have decided to do their part in the fight against fast-fashion by launching rental clothing services. Sustainability is now the smarter way to shop with customers turning to new ways of shopping like thrifting and rental clothing services.

H&M’s decided to try the clothing rental services at their flagship store in Stockholm and for just $37 a week, you can choose between 50 clothing items to rent. The trial services will launch for three months before the company decides if they want to expand it to other locations. You must be a member of H&M’s loyalty program to benefit from the rental services.

Making the change to sustainability isn’t easy as many eco-friendly brands have exorbitant price tags, which turns many people off. Fast-fashion has its drawbacks as its bad for the environment and the workers are underpaid, but it’s just so much cheaper and there are so many options available.

This isn’t H&M’s first attempt at smarter shopping, they previously released their Consciousness collection which uses sustainable materials like orange peels and pineapple for their clothing.

“We have a huge belief in rental, but we still want to test and learn quite a lot and do tweaks and changes,” Daniel Claesson, H&M’s head of business development said.

Many beloved fashion brands have made big changes in an attempt to make their products more eco-friendly and Gucci is ready to join the pack. They are combating the climate crises by coming up with an elaborate plan to go carbon neutral.

Gucci’s approach consists of two main strategies – “avoid and reduce” and “restore and offset.” The first one will see the brand using renewable energy, upcycling leather and fabric waste, and exchanging traditional processing techniques for their sustainable alternatives.

When it comes to the second phase of Gucci’s plan, they intend to support conservation efforts. Despite the fact they won’t fully stop producing harmful emissions, Gucci will financially compensate for the carbon it produces and they will make donations towards sustainability programs.

Gucci will present its first carbon-neutral runway at Milan Fashion Week later this month where they plan to offset travel emissions of 1.000 guests and 900 workers, including models, production staff, and Gucci employees. They’ll also use recycled wood for the set and send out Forest Stewardship Council-certified paper invites to their A-list guests in the front row.

Sustainable fashion has become a priority for eco-conscious fashionistas everywhere, and finally, the industry is taking action. A “Fashion Pact” has been created by Kering CEO, François Henri Pinault. The effort is aimed at reducing the fashion industry’s detrimental effects on the environment, including the climate, biodiversity, and the oceans.

Back in April, French President Emmanuel Macron recruited Pinault to come up with a solution to the fashion-related environmental crisis. In response, Pinault created the “Fashion Pact,” which promises that companies will no longer produce any single-use plastics by 2030, reduce microfiber pollution from textiles, and produce net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.  Currently, the fashion industry’s irresponsible practices are liable for an estimated 20-35 percent of the ocean’s microplastic and six percent of global greenhouse emissions.

While the pact is not a legally binding document, it will require the 32 companies who have joined to give annual data reports. The contents of said reports will be discussed in further detail at an October dinner for the CEOs hosted by Pinault. The pact signatories so far represent 150 brands, and even more are expected to join.

If you’re looking for a way to make your home and life more eco-friendly, your wardrobe is a good place to start. Follow these three quick steps to make your fashion choices more sustainable.

Thrift Stores

Why spend a fortune at expensive high-end stores when you can buy a bunch of vintage (and even brand-new) pieces at your local thrift store?

Regular Donations

Don’t simply ditch the clothes you no longer need. Check if you know someone who might like them, and donate them if that’s not the case.

Second Life

Unfortunately, many charities struggle selling donated clothes, because they’re not in such great shape. If you think some of your items are completely useless, use them as dish rags and cleaning cloths instead of donating them.

Time to Recycle

If you can’t think of a way of repurposing your clothes, recycling is always an option. You can even drop them at your local H&M and receive a discount card for 15% off your next purchase.

Sustainable Brands

When you’re buying new clothes, try to support sustainable brands who embrace eco-friendly approaches in their production process.

It’s been less than a month since Zara announced their decision to use 100% sustainable fabrics by 2025, and they just made a first step towards reaching that goal. Their latest denim collection is fully customizable and it’s giving recycled fabrics a second life.

Zara’s Edited collection lets you customize your favorite garments, and it features a wide range of jeans, shorts, jackets, and sweatshirts. The 28-piece line allows buyers to stitch names and phrases with custom embroidery of up to 11 characters.

If you’re a huge fan of personalized clothes, this is just the collection for you because it allows you to make your mark. The only downside is that the website limits the placing of your embroidery, but the ones it offers are quite enough.

The Edited collection is also a part of Zara’s effort to make their brand more eco-friendly and sustainable. Each of the products is made either from recycled cotton, cotton grown with water saving processes, or naturally grown cotton that preserves biodiversity.

It’s always refreshing to see our favorite brands adopting a more eco-friendly approach and using recyclable fabrics in the creation of their products. Zara is the latest high-end fashion house to go down this road, and they intend to only sell 100% sustainable clothes by 2025.

Zara will kick off its green initiative by putting up containers where you can bring old clothes you no longer wear. They’ll be reused or recycled into new items, as part of the company’s new social and environmental commitment which aims to transform every Zara store into an eco‑friendly oasis by 2025.

According to Pablo Isla, the chief executive of Inditex, this decision was inspired by their desire “to be a force for change,” that’s shared by everyone working for this company.

“We are the ones establishing these targets: the strength and impulse for change is coming from the commercial team, the people who are working with our suppliers, the people working with fabrics. It is something that’s happening inside our company,” said Isla in an interview with The Guardian.

Move over fast fashion, sustainability and circular fashion are having a moment (and hopefully are here to stay). As we realize that draining resources is -shockingly- bad for the environment, many companies are coming out as eco-friendly. Here are our fav brands.

House of Sunny

In an act of aggression against fast fashion, House of Sunny only produces two small, sustainably sourced and crafted collections per year.

Cinta The Label

A new company that only launched last year, Cinta The Label, uses excess materials for dyeing and printing their fabric.

https://www.instagram.com/p/BzsmnUfgWBP/

Zena Presley

The Syrian designer makes artful collections and protests major chain stores by selling her clothing exclusively online. She also steers clear of mass production and ensures fair treatment of employees.

Know the Origin

Know the Origin does just as their name suggests: they take care to locally source their materials and list the entire production line of every article of clothing.

Misha Nonoo

This no-nonsense designer makes products that have a long lifespan, avoids all unnecessary waste, and works exclusively with one ethical factory.

Misha Nonoo

This no-nonsense designer makes products that have a long lifespan, avoids all unnecessary waste, and works exclusively with one ethical factory.
